What are the Reggae Genres? There are many types of reggae music, but the most widely known is Roots reggae. The genre evolved from Jamaica during the 1960s, and has strong links to the Rastafari movement, which began in the country during the 1930s. Reggae music has distinct musical characteristics, and most songs are in major keys and contain powerful melodies performed by multiple singers.

Roots reggae became a major genre in the 1960s when the spirit of the Afro-Jamaicans took center stage. It was a form of protest and revolution, as the lyrics of the music dealt with serious socio-political issues. It was rooted in the Rastafarian religion. The genres of rocksteady and dancehall are also influenced by roots reggae.

The rhythm of reggae music is symmetrical. Bass and drums dominate the music. The vocals are usually reduced to an afterthought. The bass line is usually the most prominent instrument.
